R-R PIII - starter motor bushes

Earth connection bushes - one set of the pair set 180 degrees apart.  The spacer fits between the brush holder and the starter casting.

It is important to ensure that the brushes can slide freely in the holders - these were tight due to a build-up of oil and dirt deposits.

R-R PIII -  starter moter insulated brushes Insulated bushes - one set of the pair placed at 90 degree offset to the sets shown above.
R-R PIII - starter moter commutator An extremely dirty commutator - covered in a varnish of congealed oil with all of the segment gaps full of grime.  These were carefully scraped out and the copper surfaces cleaned with solvent.  It is amazing that the starter still operated perfectly.
R-R PIII - starter motor The end product, cleaned and polished, being an incredible transformation from the grimy lump that emerged when the engine was removed.
R-R PIII - coupling : dynamo to water pump The neat coupling that connects the dynamo to the water pump and provides motive power for the latter.
