Earth connection bushes - one set of the pair set 180 degrees apart. The spacer fits between the brush holder and the starter casting. It is important to ensure that the brushes can slide freely in the holders - these were tight due to a build-up of oil and dirt deposits. |

An extremely dirty commutator - covered in a varnish of congealed oil with all of the segment gaps full of grime. These were carefully scraped out and the copper surfaces cleaned with solvent. It is amazing that the starter still operated perfectly. | |
