A temporary face plate. A rigid wooden frame supports a sheet of plate glass (3'x1').
The frame was made with locating blocks that held it firmly inside the engine stand.
The glass is smeared with fine valve grinding paste and the head is move back and forth, occassionally being lifted and turned through 180 degrees, until all high spots have been removed. When finished, the heads were carefully cleaned to remove all traces of the paste - did you know that there are 74 drillings in each head? The head faces were checked with an engineer's rule to ensure that they were flat. |
